All About Masks

The use of non-medical masks has been proven to reduce the spread of respiratory droplets between people and on surfaces. A mask also stops you from touching your face. For the highest level of effectiveness, they must be used properly. Follow a few simple guidelines to wear and care for your mask.

Rule #1 – Always wash or sanitize your hands before and after handling your mask.

How to Wear a Mask

Your mask is ineffective if not worn properly. Follow these instructions:

Masks alone will not prevent the spread of COVID-19. You must consistently adhere to good hygiene and public health measures such as physical distancing and staying home if you are symptomatic.

Caring for your reusable mask

Your reusable mask should be cleaned after each use. If your mask becomes moist or visibly soiled remove it and put on a new one. Having a good supply of masks will help you manage the cleaning process. A good rule of thumb is to have at least 3 masks per person. 1 to wear, 1 to wash and 1 spare.

  • Wash your mask after each use.
  • Machine wash with a regular load using the hottest water appropriate to the load.
  • Or
  • Hand wash in hot water (60C) with detergent. Let it soak for a few minutes. Give it a good swish about and rinse well with clean, hot water.
  • Dry your cloth mask in the dryer or lay flat to dry on a clean surface. Wet or damp masks are not effective. Ensure your mask is completely dry before using it again.
  • Store your clean masks in a clean, dry place where they won’t become contaminated.

Do’s & Don’ts of Masks

Do discard and replace masks that have become torn, lose their shape or no longer fit snugly.

Don’t touch the front of your mask. If it falls down or you need to keep adjusting it, try another style to find a better fit.

Do keep used masks out of reach of others.

Don’t attempt to wash single-use disposable masks. Dispose of them properly in a lined, closed waste bin after one use.
