Saliva Hormone Testing

“Saliva hormone testing can help uncover hormone imbalance.”

What are Hormones?

Hormones are chemical messengers that travel through blood, enter tissues and give cells information so they can function properly. There is a delicate balance among the hormones and the interactions between them are varied and complex. Health problems may arise when hormone levels fall outside the normal range.

Why Test Hormones in Saliva?

Hormone imbalance can lead to symptoms such as mood swings, lowered sex drive and hot flashes. Saliva hormone testing may reveal hormone imbalances that contribute to chronic health problems like insulin resistance (pre-diabetes), thyroid dysfunction, estrogen dominance and androgen (i.e. testosterone) deficiency. Saliva hormone testing can also be used to monitor hormone replacement therapy (HRT) and is often used in anti-aging and disease prevention pro- grams.

Which Hormones Should I Test?

Generally speaking, we recommend a basic panel of estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, cortisol and DHEA-S for women and a panel of cortisol, DHEAS, estradiol and testosterone for men, to get the best view of how the hormones interact with one another. Even if you have many symptoms of hormone imbalance, it is important to discuss your symptoms and health concerns with your compounding pharmacist before considering saliva hormone testing. Hormone balance is only one aspect of good health and it is important to have realistic expectations about saliva hormone testing and hormone balance. Our staff can help you determine whether saliva hormone testing is right for you.

Saliva vs Blood Testing

Blood testing measures the amount of hormone that might eventually get to tissue. In contrast, saliva testing measures the amount of hormone that actually gets into tissue because hormones must pass through tissue (the saliva gland) to get into saliva. Consequently, saliva hormone levels tend to correlate better with patient symptoms. Despite its proven efficacy, saliva hormone testing is unlikely to be added to publicly-funding laboratory menus because of system cost cutting. Nevertheless, saliva hormone testing is an excellent choice for women and men who want to take charge of their health.
